GOONELLABAH MEDICAL CENTRE Practice Communication Policy

General practices are increasingly using electronic communication to correspond with patients and
other health professionals.
Goonellabah Medical Centre recognises that there are several communication channels used by staff
members to assist in the efficient and safe delivery of healthcare services to our patients.
Our Medical Centre obtains patient consent before initiating communication with a patient via SMS,
email or other means. Consent for electronic communication is implied if the patient initiates
electronic communication with the practice.
The Goonellabah Medical Centre is required to adhere to the Australian Privacy Principals, the Privacy
Act 1988 and any state-specific laws when communicating by electronic means.
In accordance with the Goonellabah Medical Centre Privacy Policy, all staff are required to take
reasonable steps to protect patient information from unauthorised disclosure.
